Dairy farm records: fertility, weight, milk, feed and deworming

Dairy Vitals has five features that all work on the same farm: fertility tracking, weight tracking, milk production records, feed and expense tracking and a deworming schedule. Each has its own page showing how it works, what you can do with it and answers to the questions farmers ask most. The first four are on every plan; the deworming schedule is part of the Starter and Growth plans.

The five features

  • Fertility tracking

Heats, inseminations, pregnancy outcomes and treatments for each animal, with the status and the next dates worked out for you.

    • Log observed and missed heats, so you can see when detection is slipping.
    • Keep each breeding attempt separate from whether it resulted in a pregnancy.
    • See each animal's status and her next expected dates without doing any sums.

  • Weight tracking

Estimate weight from two tape measurements or enter it yourself, save each with the animal and compare weights over time.

    • Get a weight in kilograms and pounds from a tape measure, with no scale.
    • Or type in a weight you already know, and save either kind with the animal and see her weight history on a chart.
    • Compare each animal's first and latest weight over any date range.

  • Milk production

Record the litres from every milking per animal, or as the farm's total, then see the farm's totals, a chart of the last month and what is still to log.

    • Type the litres for each animal on one daily sheet, or one total for the whole farm at each milking.
    • See today's total so far, the last 7 days and a chart of the last month.
    • Download daily and monthly CSV reports of the farm's litres, or reports per animal.

  • Feed and expense tracking

Record the feeds you use, per bag or per kg, the farm's expenses such as salaries and bills, and what a treatment or an insemination cost, then see a monthly summary of what you recorded. On every plan, including Free.

    • List the feeds you use, per bag or per kg, with a price, and enter what was used each day or as one total for the month.
    • Record salaries, electricity and other bills, repairs, transport and vet expenses, and a cost on a treatment or an insemination.
    • See a monthly summary of what was recorded. Workers log the day's feed and never see the money.

  • Deworming schedule

Write your farm's own deworming schedule once, see when each animal is due and record doses for one animal or the whole herd. On the Starter and Growth plans.

    • Write your farm's rules once, in a form, by age or by pregnancy and calving.
    • See each animal as due soon, due today or overdue, with its next date.
    • Record a dose for one animal or for the whole herd in one go.

How it works in three steps

  1. Step 1: Add your animals

Create your farm and add each animal with its tag number, breed and birth date. Choose how you record milk, for each animal or as the farm's total, and how many times a day you milk.

  2. Step 2: Record as it happens

Log a heat, an insemination, a pregnancy check or a treatment, save a tape measurement, type in the litres from each milking, and note the feed used and the farm's expenses. It all happens on the website, from a computer or your phone's browser.

  3. Step 3: See what is due and what is changing

Each animal shows her status and the dates ahead. The farm dashboard shows who needs attention, your milk totals and what the farm has recorded for feed and costs, and you can download your records as CSV files.

Frequently asked questions

Which features does Dairy Vitals have?

Five, for the animals and the money on the farm: fertility tracking (heats, inseminations, pregnancy outcomes and treatments, with automatic status and expected dates), weight tracking (estimates from heart girth and body length, or weights you enter, saved over time), milk production (the litres from every milking, recorded per animal or as the farm's total, with a dashboard and CSV reports), feed and expense tracking (the feeds you use, the farm's expenses and the cost of a treatment or an insemination, with a monthly summary) and a deworming schedule (your farm's own schedule, with a due date for each animal and doses recorded for one animal or the whole herd).

Which features are on the Free plan?

Fertility, weight, milk, and feed and expense records, and the fertility alerts, are on every plan, including the Free plan for up to 30 animals. The deworming schedule is part of the Starter and Growth plans and of the 14-day Starter trial, and is not on the Free plan. The paid plans also add more animals and team members and the Basic reports (herd status, what is coming up and breeding activity).

What does feed and expense tracking do?

Your farm lists the feeds it uses, per bag or per kg with a price, and enters what was used each day or as a total for the month. It also records expenses such as salaries and bills, and an optional cost on a treatment or an insemination, and adds up a monthly summary of what was recorded. It is on every plan, including Free, and it is a record, not accounting or advice.

What does the deworming schedule do?

Your farm writes its own schedule once, as rules by age or by pregnancy and calving, and Dairy Vitals works out a due date for each animal and lists who is due soon, due today or overdue. A dose can be recorded for one animal or the whole herd, with an undo for a mistake. It is part of the Starter and Growth plans.

Do the features work together?

They share the same animals. Each animal's page shows her fertility history, her saved weights and her recent milk, and an animal you mark as sold or deceased keeps all of its records.

Can my staff use it too?

Yes. The owner can invite managers and workers by email link and choose what each can do. Workers can log fertility records, milk and the day's feed, and record deworming doses where the plan includes them, but they do not see prices, expenses or costs; owners and managers can also add and edit animals, correct records, see the money records and change the deworming schedule, and only the owner sees salaries. The number of team members depends on the plan.
